Wedding dress for a mature bride

What wedding dress for a mature bride? Choosing your wedding dress is your unique opportunity to celebrate your style and personality. This is true whether this is the first time you are walking down the aisle or if you are renewing your vows. You should pick a dress that suits your occasion, lifestyle, preferences, personal style, and body type.

We get quite a few beautiful brides who get married later in life. This is so wonderful. There may be many different reasons why this is, and they are all equally valid.

Celebrate your style

So they ask me: “What wedding dress for a mature bride?” I answer: “Wear what the heck you want”  and I honestly mean it. Many are worried about what people think and honestly, you have lived long enough that you should please yourself and not everyone else. Now is the time to celebrate your style

Think about who you are, and what you have felt good in previously, is there a neckline

you always for? Do you dream back to the feel of a dress you had years ago? Then there may be some things to think about and use again and perhaps rework in another way. Using the original ideas you loved.

Here, I want to feature a few different brides, all with different ideas and personalities, so of course, their ideas should be different, too.

Practical considerations for your day

Once you have considered your own personal style, you may want to consider what type of wedding are you planning. Is it an outdoor country wedding or sleek city style? What time of the year is it, will the weather play a part? What is the general décor of the wedding? All these may play a part.

For the outdoors or beach venues, you will be considering lighter fabrics, for the autumn and winter, heavier fabrics will be suitable, and perhaps you need a cover-up. Or a jacket or wrap to go into the ceremony or just for travelling to and from the venue.

What do you feel comfortable in? make sure you can do the things you want to do on the day, sit down, hug, dance, you may have different requirements, but think them over and make sure you have allowances for that.

Styles that flatter mature brides

Perhaps you need build-in support, or perhaps you have areas you would like to cover up.

I always think that you should prioritise fit. I am biased as that is what I have spent my life preaching. But for the mature bride, this is key. A little pinch or little let out, can mean the world to how you feel and look on the day. So make sure you get professional help to get the dress fitted if you are not getting a bespoke garment made just for your shape and size.

Make sure your outfit is “hands-free” With that I mean it effortlessly fits you and you will not need to fiddle with it. Your outfit should never require you to pull or adjust it when you move.

One of my “rules” in dressing is to add the details where you would like the eye to go. So if you are a pear shape with wider hips it often works with an off-the-shoulder neckline. perhaps a flower, bow, broach or similar on the shoulder or arm. If you are bigger round the top part of your body, perhaps your details are at your waist.

Fabric choices for style and comfort

For most brides, I think less is more, but even more important when we are talking about mature brides. My view is that it works well with classic simple styles, this can be done in more elaborate fabrics, or more detailed styles work well in simpler fabrics.

Neutral soft tones such as ivory, creams blush, champagne, pale blues and silvers can work well. Often layering silks and or laces will give a very exquisite look both in terms of colour and texture.

Some of the current modern trends such as illusion necklines, off-the-shoulder, and embroideries are all bang on trend and will work well for a mature bride, without her feeling overdone.

For the fabrics, I think softer fabrics often work better on a mature body.  We have layered the embroidered tulles and delicate laces on with lovely silk satins. We have lifted the texture with satin edgings, cowl necks and other accents.

Real-life examples of beautiful mature brides we have worked with

We made this beautiful wedding dress with a shirt collar for Caroline. It was perfect for her, as she loves simple sophisticated plain tailored-cut clothing in general, so this silk Wedding dress with a shirt collar was a complete extension of her style.

We made this beautiful dress and jacket, for ……… this was for an early spring wedding and the bridal party was to walk from the ceremony to the wedding venue. So we made her a sleeveless dress she could dance in and have fun with at night, and a lovely more fitted jacket with a peplum to wear at the ceremony and for the walk. It gave it a cute but more formal look.

More contemporary styles including jumpsuits and suits, will work too. I think the key is to not make it busy, but keep it simple clean and sharp cut.

This lady went for this beautiful sequined lace, backed with pure silk. This is an example of a wedding dress being super simple cut, but quite an elaborate fabric.
