Victorian lilac satin chiffon and lace

Susie’s brief to me about her wedding dress, was that she wanted a dress which was easy to wear, and one that was not the traditional wedding dress, and one that was in a lovely colour. She had looked in a lot of different places before coming to us, and failed in her attempt to get a special dress for her Wedding Day. She went for this Victorian lilac pure silk satin with ruched satin chiffon on the bodice part. she had V-neck and covered buttons and a godet at the back. Her bolero was made in matching lace. We…

Bridesmaids!, have your say

We make a lot of bridesmaids dresses, and this year we have been working on a few weddings with very pale colours, neutrals, nudes and pale pinks. Gone are the day days where the bridesmaids are just told to have to turn up wearing a specific colour and style. Usually we have an initial meeting with the bride, and if the bridesmaids can come that is great, i try to take ideas from everyone involved on board, as it is important everyone feels happy with the result. I create several designs and fabric combinations, and it then gets approved before we start making…

Scalloped laced edged dress over pure silk

When Kirsten first came to visit us about her wedding dress, she had experimented a lot with the silhouette of the dress, and by then knew exactly what she wanted. She had not made a decision on the lace or if she wanted a ruched silk dress. She decided in the end for the Scalloped laced edged dress over pure silk. I am glad she did, it worked perfectly with the romantic setting of Edinburgh Botanics. They were so lucky, the weather was great enough for the ceremony to take place outside. The flowers were really lovely and supplied by…

Gorgeous Butter-fly girl with matching doll

We don’t make very many dresses for little girls, but we did have the very great pleasure this year to make this dress for Karen’s gorgeous bridesmaid. The Butter-fly detail is one of our favourite bridesmaid dresses we’ve made. The dress was made in duchess satin, and then we had lots and lots of netting of different weights on top of the satin. on the top layer of netting we fixed little butterflies, made in silk organza, some of them had hand beading of swarovsky crystals on the “body” of the butterflies. The velvet ribbon on the waist had a…

Robyn in Chantilly lace at Ospisdale House

When Robyn first enquired about having her wedding dress made by us, she knew about our shop from having been an apprentice Gardener at Edinburgh Botanics, and walked passed our shop everyday. Robyn knew she wanted a soft light dress, which was like a wedding dress, but easy for her to wear and move around in and feel comfortable in on her Wedding day. Ospisdale House with the use of the gorgeous grounds and the marquee in the garden. She decided for a soft satin dress, with minimum boning and internal lace up, it had a very fine Chantilly lace…

Esther’s Lake District Wedding

Esther and Joe had decided to get married in the Lake District. Esther was so lucky to have her family living there, and her parents with a farm, big enough to have all the wedding guests there. Esther wanted a relaxed wedding day, with lots of fun with friends and family, she wanted it to be outdoors and spend time in the area around, Joe is a very good Fell runner and they both really enjoy the outdoors. The wedding preparations were great, Esther’s Folks stay in the area and had asked all their friends in the area to supply summer flowers from…

Asymmetric dress for Kiwi Wedding

To have our dresses travelling to far away destinations is always a great excitement for us. Phillippa contacted us to tell us about her wedding she would be having in New Zealand. We knew we had to make her a dress for her Kiwi wedding, which would travel well.Phillippa decided for a pure white 1 shoulder strap dress. It has an internal lace up and covered buttons at the centre back, it looks quite light, but its actually got a fairly “firm” shell to the dress, where we could fix all the folds on to. We had a challenge, as the…

Red silk satin, black guipore lace embellishment and white orchids

I really liked Shelly’s ideas for her wedding dress, when we met the very first time. After discussing her ideas and the look she wanted to achieve,  I then had to come up with different fabric and lace solutions to achieve the desired look.  Shelly had a lot of inspiration from vintage styles, and she wanted a lot of drama. Her wedding venue was to be Edinburgh Botanic Gardens and for her bouquet she wanted reds and black and white orchids. Shelley settled for a “slinky” red silk satin as the main dress material, then she had a detachable train…

Coo’s Cathedral, bunting and fresh summer colours!

We work a lot with Rachel Scott Couture in fact, we are very proud to say that we are the business she recommends to do alterations on her dresses. We love all her dresses, and are happy in the assurance that they all leave perfectly fitted. Kate had bought a lovely Sassi Halford dress from Rachel. Then she came to us to enquire about having bridesmaid’s dresses made, before long she had booked us, not only for her 3 bridesmaid’s dresses but also for her mother’s outfit for the big day. Kate chose a douppion silk with a smooth finish,…

Pink, Purple, Pansy

Pink Purple pansy and more have been very popular colours this summer for Mother of the bride outfits. Here are a couple of gorgeous mums we have helped to get organised. As well as designing and making the outfit, we can advice on accessories to complete the whole look.   Julia is one of our very dear clients, we have made a lot of garments for her. We thought we got it exactly right for her son’s wedding. We made her a douppion jacket and dress in Pansy coloured douppion silk and Alex Muir made her a lovely hat. You…
