Dressing for Races Royal Ascot & Beyond, The Ultimate Guide to Race Day Fashion

Race season is upon us, bringing with it the excitement, glamour, and, of course, the fashion.  stands out as the pinnacle of the summer social calendar. Having been invited twice to the Royal Enclosure, I can sum up the experience in one word: amazing. With prestige comes protocol, and dressing appropriately (and fabulously) is key. Whether you’re a first-time guest or a seasoned racegoer looking to elevate your style, this guide will help you navigate dress codes, craft the perfect outfit, and stand out for all the right reasons.

How to Choose Your Outfit for the Races at Ascot and Beyond

Selecting the perfect race day outfit is part fashion, part strategy—and it all starts with intention. Whether you’re aiming for classic elegance or modern flair, here’s how to curate a head-turning look that suits both the occasion and your style:

Start with the Enclosure Requirements

First and foremost, your outfit must align with the dress code of the enclosure you’re attending. Generally, the more formal the enclosure, the more structured and tailored your outfit should be. Below, we outline the requirements for each enclosure at Royal Ascot.

Choose a Statement Piece to Build Around

Part of dressing for races Royal Ascot and beyond could be to start with on one hero element—this could be a stunning dress, an exquisite hat, or even a bold coat. Once you have your standout item, build the rest of your look around it with complementary tones, textures, and accessories.

Consider Colour Psychology

Different colours evoke different moods. Soft pastels speak of timeless femininity, jewel tones radiate confidence, and monochrome always says “chic.” Choose a palette that not only flatters your complexion but also matches the tone you want to set.

Play with Texture and Detail

Couture is all about craftsmanship. Think lace overlays, hand embroidery, dramatic draping, or unique silhouettes. These elements elevate your outfit from simply stylish to unforgettable.

Prioritise Fit and Fabric

The right fit is everything. Invest in a piece that’s made to your measurements, or work with a bespoke dressmaker who understands your proportions. Choose breathable fabrics like silk, linen blends, or structured cotton to stay comfortable all day.

Balance Your Accessories

If your dress is simple, go bold with your hat or jewellery. If your outfit already has a lot of detail, opt for refined, elegant accessories. Always coordinate your bag and shoes—they may be small, but they have a big impact on your overall look.

Factor in the Weather

British weather can be unpredictable. Consider a stylish wrap or lightweight coat in case of a chill, and ensure your shoes can handle both grass and gravel paths without discomfort.

Express Yourself

The best outfits always feel authentic. Race day fashion is about expressing who you are through elevated style. Confidence is your ultimate accessory, so wear what makes you feel empowered, elegant, and entirely yourself.

Why Dressing Right for the Races Matters

Royal Ascot isn’t just about horses—it’s about heritage, etiquette, and making a lasting impression. Each enclosure has its own rules, and understanding them ensures you feel confident, elegant, and event-appropriate. Let’s break down the dress codes so you can plan your couture look with ease.

Dresses for the Races Royal Ascot and beyond, Dress Codes (2025)

Royal Enclosure

This is the most formal and traditional of all areas at Royal Ascot. Women must wear dresses or skirts of modest length (just above the knee or longer). Straps must be at least 1 inch wide—strapless, off-the-shoulder, halter neck, and spaghetti straps are not permitted. Jackets and pashminas may be worn, but dresses underneath must still comply. Trouser suits are allowed but must be full-length and matching in fabric and colour. Jumpsuits are permitted if full-length and of matching colour/fabric from top to bottom. A hat with a solid base of at least 4 inches (10cm) is required—no fascinators.

Designer tip: Opt for bespoke tailoring and structure—this enclosure is your chance to go timelessly chic with a couture edge.

Queen Anne Enclosure

A slightly more relaxed but still elegant area. Women must wear a dress or top with straps one inch or greater. Strapless, off-the-shoulder, and sheer straps are not allowed. Trouser suits and jumpsuits must be full-length and of matching fabric and colour. A hat, headpiece, or fascinator is required.

Designer tip: This is the perfect opportunity to showcase bold colour, print, or playful accessories—think statement sleeves or sculptural hats.

Village Enclosure

Smart occasion wear is still expected here, with a slightly more relaxed vibe. Women must wear a dress or top with straps, and full-length jumpsuits or trouser suits are acceptable. Midriffs must be covered, and shorts are not permitted. A hat, headpiece, or fascinator is encouraged but not required.

Designer tip: Think “garden party meets race day” with flowing silhouettes, vibrant fabrics, and headpieces that complement rather than dominate.

Windsor Enclosure

The most informal of the enclosures—still stylish but more open to interpretation. There is no official dress code, but smart daywear is strongly encouraged.

Designer tip: A beautiful summer dress and elegant sandals paired with a wide-brimmed hat or subtle fascinator will go a long way.

How to Plan Your Race Day Outfit Like a Designer

Now that you know what’s expected, here’s how you create an unforgettable look:

Start with the Enclosure in Mind

Your level of formality depends on it; you probably bought your tickets a while ago.

Let Your Personality Shine

Race day is your fashion moment—whether that’s bold colour, feminine florals, or sharp tailoring.

Prioritise Fit and Comfort

Couture should move with you, not against you. It’s a lot of walking and standing, so think of your shoes. You can have a look at photos of our Mother of the bride – Groom outfits also for inspiration.

Don’t Forget the Extras

Gloves, a clutch, subtle jewellery, and quality (dare I say comfy) shoes complete your look.

Book Fittings Early

Don’t leave alterations or headwear decisions to the last minute!

Racing Circuits Around the Country

With 59 horse racing circuits in the UK, it’s a popular activity, and fashion has always been a big part of the racing scene. In Scotland, we have Ayr, Perth, Musselburgh, Kelso, and Hamilton Park. None of these circuits are as formal as Royal Ascot, but it is still lovely to dress up and look nice for the day. Remember to take into consideration that the weather might be less gentle than a June day in England. Most circuits will have a ladies’ day and a fashion commentator and perhaps even a catwalk and best dressed competition.

We have been excited to design and make outfits for the racing in Melbourne, Dubai and Hong Kong previously.
